Bosch’s painting Garden of Earthly Delights is broken into three distinct sections. The first section shows creation. It depicts a harmonious earth covered with animals, a beautiful landscape, and Adam and Eve. The second section shows the earth covered with humans, they are sinning in various ways. They have hijacked the natural world and are using it for their own pleasures without any thought to the beauty of the earth that god gave them. The final section shows the punishment for their sins. The cities that they built on earth burned, those who played secular music are tortured with instruments, those who were greedy were forced to excrete coins, etc… Bosch painted this during the start of the Reformation. The church was changing and people didn’t know what the future would bring. I have related my collages to a similar idea. I am going to be placing my collages as the Inception, the Now, and the Result. My self-portrait represents the inception. I placed my own face over the face of Jesus. One of the most influential parts of this course for me at the beginning was the movie Inside by Bo Burnham. Though there were many interesting songs, the one that hit me the most was White Woman’s Instagram. The song tells the story of someone who puts every aspect of their life online. This self portrait is the inception of a new era of narcissism that started in the Anthropocene. I placed my own face over the face of Jesus, with an instagram caption underneath. Underneath are cut out paintings and photos of the paparazzi, as well as a piece of the painting The Adoration of the Magi. I placed my face over Jesus because in Bosch’s image, Adam and Eve, the original humans look at Jesus in awe. I think that the idea that humans were made in gods image is the most damaging idea to society nowadays. We glorify ourselves through social media, we make ourselves the center of attention, and ignore that we are not the only living thing. The painting that I added came from a depiction of a man kneeling before baby Jesus, which both represents the want to be noticed and the idea of inception and newness. These pieces come together to create a piece that explains how we got to where we are today. Morton said, “But our brains on art might point toward a way forward to transcend our current mode of thinking. This current mode of thinking being what has gotten us into such trouble in the world”. I believe that the current mode of thinking was caused by a change in what people think art is. The idea of an ‘influencer’ did not exist several years ago, but it seems natural now.
